The Death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David one of the most well known pieces of work in art history. It’s described as the awful beautiful lie because of it’s misleading beauty. Marat was considered a murderer to many because of his role during the French Revolution and association with the Reign of Terror. Jacques-Louis David depicted his murdered body similar to that of Christ after his crucifixion. Marat’s corpse is presented to us as that of a martyr dying for what he believes. A willing subject for death and sacrifice in the name of freedom and France. In reality Marat was a fascist that lack regard for his fellow citizens and humans thus the alternative title The Awful Beautiful Lie.
